November 14th, 1965 marks the day when the US faced its first major battle of the Vietnam War in the Battle of la Drang. Dramatized in the popular movie starring Mel Gibson, the Battle of la Drang spanned over four days and two landings zones (or LZ's) in the highlands of South Vietnam.
Background: VC forces begin to strengthen their divisions throughtout the countryside, avoiding major roadways and relying on the rugged turrain to give them an advantage. Through intelligance gathering efforts, the US discovers the potential location of a concentration of VC forces on Chu Pong Mountain. General Westmoreland decides to test the validity of this intelligence by sending a reconnaissance in force, which ultimately results in the worst ambush in the entire Vietnam War and one of the bloodiest battles in the Vietman War.
